HAVANA, March 27 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Residents of
the town of Pedro Betancourt, in Matanzas province, increasingly fear police,
who they say abuse townspeople and even drink while in service.
"An officer by the name of Pinos, whom people call Pinito, went home
drunk and started firing his pistol," said town resident Roberto Noriega.
The man's wife and daughter fled to a neighbor's house, continued Noriega.
"After all the shooting was over," said Noriega, "Pinito went
off into a canefield near his home."
In another case, police arrested and beat a young man without apparent
provocation.
"[Fernando] Almeida was detained without having committed any offense.
After police handcuffed him, they started beating him. Passersby criticized
the police's brutality, and at some point people caused a distraction, which
allowed Almeida to run away, handcuffs and all," said Noriega.
No one knows where he might have gone.
