HAVANA, March 26 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - Lídice
Barreto, 11, has liver parasites which can be treated by a Cuban-made
parasiticide, Secnidazol. The medicine is available, but only in the dollar
market and only for foreigners.
Lídice's parents, William Barreto and Belkis Sánchez, were
told by the girl's pediatrician that the medicine would cost them two dollars
per tablet. When they went to get the prescription filled, they were told there
was a directive in effect that the medicine be sold only to foreigners, who must
present a passport and be entered in a registry at the drugstore.
