Police beat up and arrest peaceful protesters

NUEVA GERONA, March 14 (Carlos Serpa Maceira) - Seven activists were beat and arrested last night by political police in the Isle of Youth as they staged a protest march asking for democracy in Cuba and freedom for political prisoners.

The seven marched toward centric 39 Street in the island’s capital of Nueva Gerona bearing signs that read: "Liberty without exile for political prisoners," and "Liberty and democracy for Cuba."

Several dissident and human rights organizations organized the march. Most of the activists were subsequently fined 30 pesos for causing a public disturbance and freed, but one, Rolando Jiménez, is being held and reportedly has gone on a hunger strike.
