HOLGUIN, March 12 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - With the
slogan "Respect among residents promotes neighborhood unity" local
officials in Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín province, are trying to mend
relationships that have been frayed thin at meetings held to adjudicate the
right to buy Chinese-made Panda TV sets.
"The distribution system established by the government for the Chinese
TV sets is what has created the problem," said one Sagua de Tánamo
resident.
Practically everyone agrees there have been numerous fights at the meetings,
usually held at Committee for the Defense of the Revolution headquarters in each
block. They are meant to establish who will be the lucky few to be awarded the
right to buy the TV sets, at prices slightly above 4,000 pesos. The deciding
factors are the candidate's revolutionary credentials, as evidenced by political
correctness, availability for volunteer labor and guard duty, and support of
government initiatives.
"Residents argue, insult each other and even fight. This has caused
plenty of enmity among people who have lived next ot each other for years,"
said a resident.
