19 homes do without water for six years

NUEVA GERONA, June 24 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - 19 families in the neighborhood known as Geología, in the Isle of Youth, haven’t had water for the last six years.

"Most children here have intestinal parasites," said one woman who lives in the neighborhood but who refused to be identified.

The residents acquire the parasites from their only source of water, the Cristal reservoir, about 250 meters (about 275 yards) away.

"They cut off our water about six years ago. Since then, they supply us with a tanker truck which is supposed to arrive every 10 days, but really comes around more like every 15 days, so people have to get water from the reservoir," added the woman.

The residents of Geología, located about 15 miles from the provincial capital of Nueva Gerona, have asked their delegate to the Popular Power (National Assembly), Julia Saiz, to look into the problem, but she has said she has no way of solving it.
