NUEVA GERONA, June 21 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The
El Corderito restaurant, closed some months ago for repairs, has reopened under
the name Ínsula, now pricing its menu in dollars. The restaurant is part
of the Cubanacán chain of establishments.
"Before remodeling, this restaurant traded in pesos, even if at very
high prices," said resident Lázaro García, who added that
local residents could not afford to eat there, then or now.
"Dollarization is on the increase in the Isle of Youth. Cubanacán
just opened an establishment called Di Tú, selling chicken in dollars
only.
People are saying that they are unhappy with the trend," said García.
At least 28 commercial establishments in the Isle of Youth now operate
exclusively in dollars.
"This shows again that government authorities dont care to solve
peoples problems; they are more interested in taking in dollars. If Cubans
are paid in pesos, and have to pay in dollars, at a 26 to 1 exchange rate, they
are poorer every day," said García.
