HAVANA, June 19 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org)) - Officials of
the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution threatened independent
journalist Carlos Serpa Maceira at his home in the Isle of Youth, south of
Havana, because he has refused to sign the government-proposed Constitutional
initiative to declare Socialism "untouchable" in Cuba.
The officials said they went to see Serpa at home because he was the only
one who hadnt signed the petition.
"I told them that signing is supposed to be voluntary, and that I wasnt
signing because Im in complete disagreement with the governments
proposal and with the present Constitution," said Serpa by telephone from
his home.
When he refused to sign, the officials told Serpa that he was "endangering
his 9-year-old daughters future." Cubans widely understand such a
statement to mean that the child could find the way to higher education, for
example, to be barred to her in future.
Serpa was repeatedly visited by several officials of the Committees and by
first lieutenant of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Antonio Herrera Sánchez.
They all pressured Serpa to sign the petition, which according to government
sources, has been signed by almost 99% of eligible voters.
