CAMAGÜEY, June 14 (Yoel Blanco García, CPIC / www.cubanet.org)
There are 34 spoons available for more than 1,400 prisoners, some of whom are
known to have tuberculosis, at the Cerámica Roja prison in Camagüey
province, according to a note smuggled out by political prisoner Virgilio
Mantilla Arango.
"The scarcity of spoons is dangerous, because there is an indeterminate
number of prisoners who have tuberculosis," reads part of the note from
Mantilla, 30, an activist with the Cuban Foundation of Human Rights who has been
held since March 4.
Mantillas note also explains that the spoons are in very poor
condition, that many are broken, and that they are the source of daily conflicts
among the inmates.
Mantilla, who has not been tried, is accused of disorderly conduct in
public, and was arrested as he participated in a peaceful demonstration in
support of independent journalist Jesús Álvarez Castillo.
