GÜINES, June 12 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
- Residents of Güines, a town south of Havana, returned or refused hundreds
of kilograms of mortadella that were sold by government-run stores under the
food rationing system June 6.
A number of residents confirmed that the sausage had a strong rotting smell
and that people refused it in spite of their need for food. The mortadella was
sold at the rate of 250 grams (about half-a-pound) per capita.
"Its a lack of sensitivity on the part of our government, which
forces people to eat something they dont want, while officials feast at
their leisure," said one Güines resident, echoing the feelings of
many.
