HAVANA, June 10 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - A
slaughterhouse and a poultry processing plant in Candelaria, Pinar del Río
province, have turned the river going through town into a lifeless ditch by
dumping untreated waste into it.
"Even though they have several holding tanks, they don’t use them,"
said Lázaro Lemus, a local activist.
Another activist, Alberto Hernández, said: "The crematorium for
these plants has been out of order since who knows when. Any unwanted
by-products end up in the river."
