Negligence hurts the environment

HAVANA, July 22 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - Local authorities ordered garbage from the beach communities east of Havana to be transferred to an improvised dump in Campo Florido nearby where it cannot be processed adequately.

Guillermo Guerra, an employee of the Community Services Authority, says the authority has the equipment necessary to treat the garbage, but officials in charge haven’t bothered to take steps to solve the problem.

Guerra added: "Nobody cares. Right there, at Campo Florido, there is an abandoned oxidation lagoon, overgrown with weeds, but they are dumping the waste in the improvised dump, after carrying it in in animal-drawn carts. The waste is not treated, and so much untreated organic matter is dangerous."

Guerra says that debris and tree cuttings haven’t been taken to the dump on the road from Tarará to Barreras because the bulldozer there has problems with its engine. That has to be taken to Camagüey, the only place where there is a suitable repair facility.

"Since everything here is so slow and bureaucratized, it will probably be months before they take the engine to be repaired and bring it back and install it. If they take it. Meantime, the environment has to suffer for all this negligence," said Guerra.
