GÜINES, July 18 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
- Residents of Güines found themselves returning thousands of eggs they
bought at a government-operated store July 14 because they were rotten. Or
rather, tried to return them, because store managers have so far refused to
return the customers money.
The eggs were sold at 2 pesos each. The average monthly income in Cuba is
240 pesos; the average pension is 110 pesos. Several consumers complained that
store managers were refusing to return their money.
"This is a way of humiliating the people, because there are no eggs
under the food rationing plan, and now they sell them in the free markets, but
they are rotten," said one customer.
Some stores have been set up in other provinces for the sale of eggs outside
the food rationing system, at 1.20 pesos each. Eggs have been so scarce lately,
that some entrepreneurs try to buy them to later resell them at a higher price.
