PINAR DEL RIO, June 28 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Public Health authorities have denied local endocrinologist
Dr. Ramón Valdés Carrillo permission to attend a medical
convention in Guanajuato, México, where two of his papers will be
presented.
Dr. Valdés was invited to the convention, to be held from July 2 to
6, to present two papers related to his research on the reproductive health of
diabetics, said Dr. Sergio Luis Ruiz, of the independent Cuban Medical
Association.
Initially, administrators at the Abel Santamaría hospital, where Valdés
works, approved his participation and made arrangements to cover his absence.
But the provincial director of Public Health, Dr. María Cecilia Santana,
refused to authorize Valdés absence, saying it would adversely
affect the hospital.
Some here see Santanas refusal as payback for Valdés
frequent collaboration with Vitral, a magazine published by the Catholic diocese
of Pinar del Río.
