Woman fired for friendship with dissident

CAMAGUEY, January 23 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - Ileana González Peña was fired from her job and stripped of Communist Party membership due to her continuing friendship with dissident Walfrido Velázquez Pupo.

González used to work in the basic services unit in the city of Puerto Padre until the director of the unit called a meeting with the local chapter of the Communist Party.

Participants at that meeting decided that González should be fired and stripped of party membership for her association with Velázquez, a human rights activist.

González has two young children.
