HAVANA, January 21 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba- Verdad / www.cubanet.org) -
The devaluation of the peso after the events of September 11 are affecting the
Cuban diet. A number of products have either gone up in price or are not
available in pesos at all.
Domestic products, such as candy, soft drinks, and chicken, have disappeared
from the peso markets and can only be found in the dollar stores, where a fried
chicken quarter is 1.20 dollar.
Staples, including fruits, vegetables, and beans, have almost doubled in
price. A guava now costs 4 pesos, a pound of tomatoes 5 pesos, and a pound of
black beans, between 8 and 10 pesos.
