Experiences of prisoners in cells at the DSE and Contra Military
Intelligence in Guantánamo
(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, January 14, 2002) Political prisoners Alexander
Lobaina Jiménez, 31 years old, and Alberto Martínez Martínez,
17 years old, recount their experiences in the cells of the Department of
Operations of the State Security and of the contra military intelligence, during
the initial process of their incarceration for the supposed crime of illegal
exist from national territory.
According to declarations made by Alberto Martínez Fernández,
the father of 17 year old Alberto, during the 18 days of interrogation in both
of these units of repression, these young men were the object of psychological
and physical torture; they were confined to cells void of all light, (night and
day is indistinguishable), the temperature in these cells is approximately 33°
C (91° F) in spite of the constant humidity. They were taken to
interrogation rooms with air conditioners that are left on, practically 24
hours a day, maintaining the room at approximately 8° C (46° F).
These young men asked of the First Lieutenant Lamorrut and Major Caraballo,
who is an instructor in the case, to turn off the air- conditioning, and their
response, was for them to shut-up, that they were the ones in charge.
Alexander and Alberto, both attempted to abandon the country driven by
harassment and persecution by the repressive Cuban system at the service of the
autocrat Fidel Castro, whom through demagogues methods has manipulated the
human mind, turning Cubans into marionettes at his service, and to those that
oppose it they impose extremely severe and unscrupulous punishments such as
those being imposed upon these young victims of the dictatorship in this Island
in the Caribbean.

Magazine confiscated from political prisoner in Combinado de Guantánamo
(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, January 14, 2002) Alberto Martínez
Martínez, 17 years old, who is presently incarcerated in the provincial
prison of Guantánamo awaiting his trial for the supposed crime of
attempting to leave national territory illegally, denounces officials from the
Department of State Security inside the prison headed by Captain Silvestre
Obret Herrera, who confiscates books and magazines which family members bring
to the prisoners . This morning, the young Alberto became a victim of this
violation after his magazine titled "Democracy is a Discussion" was
confiscated from him.
Also, this young man reports that he has not been provided with any
toiletries for more than 40 days.
Martínez Martínez, the youngest political prisoner being held
in this penitentiary center, is awaiting trial for something which does not
constitute having committed and does not constitute committing a crime in any
place on earth, all the while the Cuban government wastes millions in support
campaigns for the 5 Cuban spies in prison in the United States who have been
charged with the proven crime of espionage.

Lardiller, Provincial Delegate of the Democratic Party 30th of November, "Frank

Correspondence to prisoners is now forbidden at Combinado de Guantánamo
(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, January 14 the 2002) According to a
document read by Tte, Flavio Hernández, second in command of the TO-500
in Combinado de Guantánamo, all correspondence between prisoners and
their relatives has been forbidden effective January 4th, 2002.
The document in question clearly states that any officer caught delivering
a letter to an inmate would be expelled from his job and the prisoner's visits
will be suspended indefinitely. Any relative who sends a letter to a prisoner
will also be sanctioned.
This new law is truly criminal and unjust, for the five Cuban spies
confined in a prison in the United States enjoy all kinds of rights and
privileges unheard of in the so called Cuban prisons which are nothing more
than inhumane torture centers.

and Coordinator of the COOCE. For the Information Bridge Cuba Miami. Given in
