HAVANA, January 8 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) -
Lately, Cuban lovers are experiencing increasing difficulties finding space to
share a few intimate moments, and what has been a bad situation is about to turn
worse.
For years, the housing shortage has meant that lovers here, including in
many cases married couples who live with relatives, have had to forage to find a
secluded spot for their trysts. For many, the only option were "posadas,"
which rented rooms for a few hours, although lately these were so busy that
couples had to wait in line in the street, all pretense at discretion
relinquished, often for many more hours than they actually spent inside.
Now many posadas are being converted to living quarters which people here
have taken to calling "cubículos." One such, at the corner of
Vento and Camagüey Streets, was turned into 38 cubículos consisting
of one bedroom, bath and kitchen. The building sports a sign at its entrance
that reads: "We are continuing the work of the Revolution."
A knowledgeable source said present plans call for conversion of all but two
of the posadas in Havana. Lately, couples can regularly be seen making love in
parks, vacant lots, and along the Malecón, Havanas waterfront
boulevard.
"For us, all thats left are the campgrounds or the bushes,"
said one young man with a shrug.
