PINAR DEL RIO, February 25 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Although police are keeping mum about it, residents of Los
Palacios, in western Pinar del Río province, give wide credence to a
rumor that at least a dozen 9mm handguns were forcibly taken from a shooting
range on February 13.
According to information provided by Bernardo Herrera, a labor activist,
several unknowns locked the night guard at the shooting range in a storage room
and took the guns with lots of ammunition.
The guns were used for target practice by a special forces army unit based
nearby.
"Approximately 20 persons have been summoned to the Los Palacios police
station, where they have been fingerprinted and photographed. The guard on duty
the night of the incident, as well as the one who was off that night, are both
under arrest at the headquarters of the Technical Investigations Department,"
said Herrera.
A police source, however, called the measures "routine."
