HAVANA, January 30 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Police in
Manzanillo, in the eastern Cuban province of Granma, raided an agricultural
market and expelled the produce sellers after fining them and confiscating their
merchandise.
There was no immediate explanation for the raid conducted by the citys
assistant police chief Captain Pedro Nápoles Escalona. The sellers
reportedly were fined 1,500 pesos each.
Agricultural markets exist outside the government structure of controlled
prices and ration books. They have been legal for some time. In them, producers
can sell their produce with some limitations and consumers can find items not
otherwise available at somewhat reasonable prices.
