NUEVA GERONA, April 26 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) -
Eighteen households in the Santa Bárbara district, in the Isle of Youth,
off the southern coast of Havana, have been getting their water bills like
clockwork for the past three years, in spite of the fact that they havent
had running water in their homes all that time.
"We dont get water and they charge for the service. Besides, if
we dont pay, inspectors issue 50 peso fines," said resident Maritza
Domínguez.
Residents of this small community, about 12 miles distant from the municipal
capital of Nueva Gerona, have petitioned local authorities for relief, but havent
had an answer.
"We have also appealed to the Water and Sewer Authority, but they havent
done anything," said Domínguez.
"We havent had running water for years; we have to hand-carry it
from the house of a neighbor everybody calls El Indio," said another
resident.
