NUEVA GERONA, April 24 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - A
twenty-two-ton shipment of rice spoiled when it got wet as it was being
transported from the port of Batabanó, in the south coast of Havana
province, to the Isle of Youth.
"The rice was transported in a barge and no one adequately covered the
sacks with oilcloths, so it was exposed to the elements during the trip. It
arrived at Nueva Gerona completely wet," said someone who works in maritime
transportation in the area and who asked not to be identified for fear of
reprisals.
The source added that local officials are keeping quiet about the incident
to forestall a public outcry, since the rice was destined for the commercial net
which sells islanders their quota rations.
"By keeping the loss secret, officials evade the consequences. No one
is responsible, either criminally or civilly, for the loss of the product,"
said the source, adding that this is not an isolated incident; there have been a
number of instances in which sugar was lost under the same circumstances.
