HAVANA, April 19 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - One
woman died and her children and husband were hurt April 16, after the roof
collapsed on the condemned building they were living in.
Diana Ivis Galán, 29, died; her children Jadira and Jadir, 13, and 6,
respectively, were seriously hurt, and husband Jorge García was also
hurt.
"When we dug through the rubble, we found Mrs. Galán dead,
clutching her son," said a neighbor.
The building, at Atarés 305, between Arango and Municipio Streets,
had been condemned by the local housing authority years ago, but García
and Galán continued living in it because they had nowhere else to go, a
situation that is increasingly common here as the housing shortage becomes more
acute.
Next-door neighbors Faustina Rodríguez and her son Erison Capote told
Cuba-Verdad that they haven't been able to sleep since the incident.
"The political authorities and the area's architecture department have
been informed of the building's condition, but they haven't done anything to
solve the problem," said Rodríguez.
There had been previous collapses in the vicinity, but no fatalities up to
now.
