CAMAGÜEY, April 12 (Normando Hernández, CPIC / www.cubanet.org)
- Workers from the municipal sewer authority in Colombia municipality, Las Tunas
province, dump human waste they pump out of septic tanks in open fields.
"After cleaning out the septic tanks, the truck driven by Armando Cutiño
dumps its load in the sugar cane fields adjacent to the cemetery," said
Orestes Giniebra Carmona, a local human rights activist.
Giniebra added that public health specialists that didnt want to be
identified said the procedure endangers the health of the towns residents.
"This could easily cause an epidemic of hepatitis or another infectious
disease," said one of them.
Giniebra said that local activists petitioned local government April 8 to "solve
the problem immediately," but officials have not responded.
