PINAR DEL RIO, April 1 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Government-operated cafeterias in the town of San Juan y Martínez,
Pinar del Río province, are selling Imaginary omelet
sandwiches, and the townspeople are irate because on March 20 the price of the
item went up from 2 to 3 pesos.
People here say what the customer gets is a piece of bread, a raw egg, and
the explanation that "there is no fat to cook the egg" from the
officials in charge of the establishments.
"This is an arbitrary and opportunistic measure; they are taking
advantage of the scarcity of food, because officials know people have no other
choice than to buy whatever is offered," said one local man.
Residents have a right to buy three eggs under the food rationing system,
although sometimes, the supply system fails.
"Sometimes several months go by and there are no eggs in the stores,"
said one resident.
