HAVANA -- (AP) -- Hate and vengeance won't bring justice after hijackers
crashed four commercial jetliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and
a field in Pennsylvania, Havana's archbishop said Sunday while celebrating a
Mass in memory of the victims.
Members of the U.S. Interests Section, the American mission in Cuba, and
other diplomats attended the service at Havana's cathedral.
Cardinal Jaime Ortega warned that "the future of humanity'' depends on
how people act now.
"With pain we rebel against a calculated, evil act that involves so
many innocent men and women,'' the archbishop said. "Injustice always
angers us, but justice won't be re-established with hate and vengeance.''
His comments echoed those of Pope John Paul II, who urged people to show
restraint and a commitment to peace while celebrating an open-air Mass on Sunday
in Frosinone, Italy.
"This battle can be won or lost in the heart of man, and victory
depends on his capacity to love and be united,'' Ortega said.
