HAVANA, September - Some of my great loves are in the United States; among
them my daughter, my granddaughter, born in Miami last July 22, and a brother in
New York. I also have good and esteemed friends there. In fact, the United
States is also a little bit my country, but I hadn't fully realized it until I
learned of Tuesday's sinister acts of terrorism against it.
It was horrible! The sorrow and the anguish for what happened were so
intense that I felt physical pain. I understood why José Martí
cried on the death of Abraham Lincoln, without ever having known Lincoln.
I don't think there is a single Cuban who doesn't have at least one relative
in the United States and, even if we don't all feel the same way, that country
is also, in some way, the country of all Cubans. But besides that, the United
States doesn't just represent the so-called American dream, two cars and your
own home. That great country symbolizes all of mankind's potential.
The business of hating and inciting hate is really terrible. Hate, it is
becoming evident, leaves man bereft of his humanity; it makes him into a cold
machine of death.
Referring to Tuesday's events, Fidel Castro said that these terrorist acts
can only end when we achieve peace. It seems his government's war-like avatars
have reached their end. May that be so.
Castro also said and for the first time in many years I agree with him that
an imposed way of thinking fosters irritability and rebelliousness. It is a pity
that he hasn't put that assessment in practice within Cuba.
The crime was horrendous. The response, there are no options, has to be
strong. It doesn't have to do with revenge; the terrorist act was so brutal that
there is no need to think of revenge. It's simply a matter of making those
responsible pay for their cruel actions, lest the foundation of civilization
soften and we all run the risk of being buried by its collapse.
At this time of mourning for the American people, I join all those who wish
that God help and bless the United States of America.
