CAMAGÜEY, September 7 (Leopoldo Marín, CPIC / CubaNet) - 27
teenagers have been summoned by police authorities to explain why they are not
in school in Vertientes, Camagüey province.
The youths, most of whom are 15 years old and just out of the 9th grade,
were told to present themselves at the local office of the Ministry of the
Interior by Enrique Argüelles, the officer in charge of the minors' section
at the Ministry. Any who don't show up will be dealt with according to the
appropriate provision of the penal code.
"It's interesting that the police get involved in the case of minors
who don't want to continue their schooling, instead of trying to figure out the
causes of the problem," said a teacher who did not want to give his name.
Most of the youths gave economic reasons for not wanting to go to school.
Some said they have no shoes, or money for school supplies. Others said they
want to help their parents by earning some money. A few said they want to get
married.
