Just hours after she confirmed she would run for Florida governor, former
attorney general Janet Reno said she thought her decision last year to have
federal agents abduct Cuban boat boy Elian Gonzalez at gunpoint and return him
to Cuba was supported by "the great majority" of Floridians.
"Most of them, I think the great majority, agreed that the little boy
belonged with his daddy," Reno told the CBS Radio News Network. "And
they appreciate the fact that I stood up and made the hard decision despite the
circumstances."
Contrary to Reno's claim, most political observers believe that the Elian
raid was a massive political liability for the Clinton administration in
Florida, costing former vice president Al Gore thousands of votes in last year's
presidential race within Florida's Cuban-American community.
Reno did not say whether she thought her decision to launch the 1993 FBI
assault on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, which cost some 80
lives, was popular as well.
