CAMAGÜEY, October 15 (Mario Enrique Mayo, CPIC / CubaNet) Eighteen
recent nursing graduates in Sierra de Cubitas did not show up to work at their
assigned jobs and local health officials classified the incident as a "strike."
The nurses all gave sickness as the reason for their absence.
The provincial head of nursing said the matter would be looked into by the
Party and the Communist Youth League. She added that if it became necessary to
send the eighteen to the doctor to determine whether they are sick, it will be
done. The official also said the nurses would get a second chance to show up to
work. Otherwise, the Social Service Law would be applied to them.
That law stipulates that recent graduates have to serve for two years
wherever the government assigns them, to pay for their education.
Public health specialists often abandon their carreers looking for better
paid jobs. The ministry has determined that no one in the public health field
can leave the country before working for between three and five years wherever
they are assigned after fulfilling their social service.
