GUANTÁNAMO, 9 of October (Luis Torres Cardosa, Lux InfoPress /
CubaNet) - More than 300 inmates were part of a riot that lasted sixteen hours
at the Guantánamo jail compound, on the of 1B level on the morning of
September 21.
According to the reports, a cut to the power and drinking water supplies
sparked the events. A source from the "Presidio Político Pedro Luis
Boitel" (a political prisoners organization that denounces, from inside
penitentiaries, prisoners' condition) informed that the prisoners were armed
with iron and wood sticks, spoons, and glass containers, and were shouting "assassins!".
The riot started at 6 a.m. of the 21st and lasted until 10 p.m.
on the 22nd of September.
Lieutenant colonel Jorge Cheniar Perez, head of the penitentiary, and Pablo
Reyes, head of internal order, headed the anti-riot troops.
The main organizers were placed on punishment cells the following morning.
