THE Cuban president, Fidel Castro, will visit Uganda soon, foreign affairs
minister James Wapakhabulo said yesterday.
Wapakhabulo told the parliamentary committee on presidential and foreign
affairs that modalities for the visit were being worked out.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ralph Ochan,
said the date for the visit would be communicated as soon everything is set.
This will be Castro's first visit to Uganda since he took over power on
February 16, 1959.
Wapakhabulo said Uganda was committed to strengthening its relations with
Cuba.
Uganda's embassy in Cuba is closed due to financial constraints.
He said Uganda and Cuba have signed several agreements and established a
joint permanent commission whose sixth session is to take place in Kampala from
October 16 to 19.
The ministry said the session would review and evaluate projects of
co-operation between the two countries.
