SANTIAGO DE CUBA, September 28 (Milagros Beatón, APLO) - Odalis
Torres Nimer, a nurse at the "Saturnino Lora" provincial hospital, in
Santiago de Cuba, was fired for speaking in favor of democracy in spite of a
nursing shortage at the hospital.
"They called me to the office. Once there I was interrogated by the
director of the hospital, by the head of nursing, María Toga Castellanos,
and by other political leaders, who threatened me for my way of thinking and for
speaking favorably about the restoration of democracy in Cuba," said
Torres.
She had also spoken out about the lack of sterile materials, bed linens and
towels at the hospital. That, says Torres, was considered subversive by the
administrators.
The day she was fired, two State Security officers, identified as Juan
Ernesto and Pablo Durán, showed up at her home and told her they would
put her in jail if she continued talking about shortages at the hospital.
