EAST LONDON -- Fifteen Cuban-trained doctors, including two paediatricians
and two anaesthetists, are due to be deployed in the province today.
Most of the doctors are being sent to rural hospitals. However, Frere
Hospital here, which has been hit by crippling staff shortages, will gain an
anaesthetist.
"This will beef up our services as well as cementing our relationship
with Cuba," Eastern Cape health spokesman Mahlubandile Mageda said.
Frontier Hospital in Queenstown is among the most fortunate -- it is set to
gain two paediatricians, two surgeons and a general medicine practitioner.
Other hospitals benefiting from the new arrivals include Mary Theresa in
Mount Frere (two family doctors), St Elizabeth in Lusikisiki (family doctor,
anaesthetist), Bambisana in Lusikisiki (family doctor), St Patrick's in Bizana
(family doctor) and Nessie Knight in Qumbu (family doctor).
