FROM CUBA

The few public telephones left are slowly disappearing

HAVANA, November 5 (Juan Carlos Linares / CubaNet) Workers of the Cuban telephone company (ETECSA) are taking out the few public telephones left in the city.

"They say they are taking it away to be repaired, but they never bring it back," said an employee in a store from which the telephone was taken a few days back.

In Arroyo Naranjo municipality there are very few phones left. One can still see the signs and wire in places where they were installed.

A few months back, a new type of phones were installed that operated with a magnetic card that allowed 100 minutes of calls for 5 pesos. These have since been retired because some people were stealing at least one electronic component from them which was later used in building auto and house alarms. The part supposedly can fetch a high price in the black market.

The few public phones left are in newsstands and other businesses, but when these are closed, the phones are out of reach.

"If there are few phones left, and they disconnect them, pretty soon we are going to be incommunicado in Havana," said one resident of Arroyo Naranjo.
