Four Americans arrested in Cuba

CIENFUEGOS, May 1 (Sunset Nogueras Rofes) - Four American tourists, three men and a woman, were arrested April 25 in Cienfuegos by officials of the Cuban Immigration Department.

Two Immigration officials said the four had been detained because they didn’t have the proper documents. However, a few hours before their arrest, the tourists had registered at the La Unión hotel, which customarily requires tourists to identify themselves.

Residents presume the tourists were arrested because they had been handing out medicines, school materials and toiletries as they made their way through the "Punta Cotica" neighborhood of the city, attracting a large number of people.

The Immigration officials said the four Americans had only been held for a short while

for a "routine procedure" and "some conversation." They said they had not confiscated the tourists’ film or videotape. The officials, however, expressed disgust with the residents’ avidity for the materials the Americans had been distributing.

The Americans presumably left the province on April 27. The Immigration officials said they did not know their names.
