HAVANA, March 26 (Luis Viño Zimerman, UPECI) - Movie theaters in
Havana are slowly disappearing; there are only 56 left out of 182 that were
operating in 1959.
The buildings in which the theaters are located typically receive little or
no maintenance. When they reach a certain state of deterioration, government
officials simply order them shuttered.
Government figures show Havana is a city of 2,151,904 people. This would
indicate one theater per 38,427 residents. The government has built small halls
where video tapes are shown to supplement the disappearing theaters, but many
are doubtful that they have enough capacity to meet demand.
Meantime, the police persecute clandestine video tape rental and projection
establishments that have sprung up in response to the demand for them.
