Operating rooms in Guantánamo hospital not up to standards

HAVANA, March 23 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) - Conditions in the operating rooms of the Agostino Neto hospital in Guantánamo do not meet basic standards of hygiene.

There is air-conditioning in only two of the seven operating rooms and cockroaches amble freely through all of them. There are stains on the floors, sheets, clothing, and rags used by the operating room personnel.

Disposable gloves are used repeatedly, after being washed and exposed to vapor, which doesn’t sterilize them, but it does weaken them to the point where they sometimes rupture during surgery, according to operating room personnel who did not want to be identified.

Six years ago, surgeons and technicians were given the opportunity of purchasing one lab coat. Since then, they have had to either work with that one coat or find some more in the black market.
