HAVANA, March 21 (Rafael Pérez, AFPCP) - Some time back, having
dollars in Cuba guaranteed, at the very least, a little better treatment from
the clerks in shops. Lately, even that doesn't hold true; service in dollar
establishments has taken a definite turn for the worse.
"Not even with dollars do you get any respect," said a man who
wanted to buy a pack of cigarettes in a stand selling in dollars in the Cerro
district of Havana.
Another man wanted to buy a lemon-flavored soft drink for his young son, but
all they had were other flavors, none cold. The frustrated customer said, "Not
even with dollars can you get something the kid likes."
The clerk hearing him snapped back, "See if your dollars will buy you
an airline ticket to Italy," referring to the fact that Cubans cannot dream
of doing what any citizen of another country can do at anytime.
