HAVANA, March 20 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad) - More than forty women
who were asked complained about the quality of the yogurt the Cuban government
sells children who cannot digest other milk products.
The women, all mothers of young children and residents of the Arroyo Naranjo
district of Havana, complained that the yogurt is often watery and decomposes
easily.
Workers in the "La Beatriz" plant where the yogurt distributed
here is produced said that they dont have glass jars to pack their
product, so they pack it in nylon bags. They added that the delivery trucks
often have faulty refrigeration equipment, so the yogurt deteriorates quickly.
Yogurt here is only sold for children under 7 years of age who cant
digest milk and for others by doctors prescription. Children over the age
of 7 may buy yogurt made of soy beans, which many say is of even lower quality.
Some of the mothers who spoke to reporters for this article, said that the
yogurt sold in dollar stores, creamy, tasty and of much better quality, is also
made at "La Beatriz."
