PINAR DEL RIO, March 15 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Residents of
Pinar del Río expect an onslaught of mosquitoes this year as in previous
years as a result of the hundreds of breeding areas that exist in the western
area of Cuba.
More than 50 miles (80 kilometers) of ditches, canals, rivers and others
which pock-mark the region, as well as miles of tunnels dug for military defense
over the years.
For years local health authorities have not been able to effectively combat
the insects, and government spokesmen only repeat that they dont have the
means for an effective campaign.
"Lets pray that we have little rain, because otherwise the
mosquitoes are going to be worse than in previous years," said one
resident."
"There arent even mosquito nets in the stores, so we are totally
defenseless," said one woman who asked to remain anonymous.
