PINAR DEL RIO, March 14 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Hundreds of
lobster fishermen in La Coloma, Pinar del Río province, have been making
do with 80 percent of their salaries; they haven t received the remaining
20 percent, which is
supposed to be paid in dollars, since December.
Officials in charge of the local fishing industry say they dont have
the dollars to pay
them, in spite of the fact that the lobsters are sold exclusively in the
dollar market.
The government fisheries company pays the fishermen 50 dollars (1,100 pesos)
per ton of lobsters delivered. From that it discounts approximately 40 percent
or 20 dollars (440 pesos) for supplies, fuel and repairs on the boats. Of the
net payment to the fishermen of 30 dollars (660 pesos), 80 percent is paid in
pesos and 20 percent in dollars.
