More than one-hundred dissident organisations in Cuba have backed calls for
a referendum on the country's political and economic systems.
The referendum would ask the Cuban people whether they want to introduce
changes that would guarantee freedom of expression, an amnesty for political
prisoners, the right to set up private enterprises and the creation of a
multi-party political system.
According to the Cuban constitution, a call for a referendum must be
supported by at least ten-thousand signatures, which the dissident groups hope
to gather this year. The call, known as Proyecto Varela, had been originally
promoted by the Cuban Liberation Movement.
