Baker fired for associating with dissidents

HAVANA, February 27 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - Lester González Pentón, a baker at the "La Gaviota" bakery in the central Cuban city of Santa Clara was fired from his job after officials warned him to quit associating with dissident groups and he refused.

González was the master baker and pastry maker at "La Gaviota." The bakery’s administrator, Luis Alain Lemus, had told him to stay away from the counterrevolutionary groups. When González continued his activities with the Support Group for the Independent Teachers Union, Lemus fired him.

Co-workers said González is a hard worker and knowledgeable about his trade.

"La Gaviota" is one of several bakeries in the area that sell their products in the dollar economy.
