SANTIAGO DE CUBA, June 26 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - There aren't enough
hypodermic needles for all the patients that require them at the Saturnino Lora
Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, the island's second largest city, said a hospital
employee that asked not to be identified.
At the Saturnino Lora, five needles are assigned for each pavillion, each of
which holds at least 20 patients.
"After the first five patients are injected, the nurse has to take the
needles to sterilization and wait for them to be washed and sterilized, which
takes between one and two hours... and then repeat the operation as many times
as necessary," said the employee.
"Patients in the hospital have become so used to shortages that they
don't complain," he said.
