HAVANA, July 12 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) - A
19-year-old draftee standing guard outside the perimeter of the provincial
prison in Guantánamo shot himself in the chest with his rifle on June 11.
Alexei Cruz Frómeta had reportedly been threatened with incarceration
by prison higher-ups as a result of being AWOL for several hours. Chief of
prison security Reinaldo Soler, prison director Jorge Chediak, and political
officer Major Agramonte, had told Cruz he would be locked up in a punishment
cell. Later, as Cruz was standing guard outside the prison's post 2, he blew out
his right lung with his Soviet-made AKM rifle. The information out of the prison
was that Cruz had committed suicide.
