HAVANA, February 19 (Claudia Márquez Linares, Grupo Decoro) - A
collapsing roof in Old Havana left four hurt, including a four-year-old boy who
suffered a skull fracture.
The building, at 58 Cuba Street in the historic district of Old Havana, is
home to more than 60 families "It has been falling apart for three years
now," said Lourdes, a resident who has lived in the building for 30 years.
The old buildings in the district, some dating back centuries, are slowly being
repaired but priority is given to those related to tourism. The collapsing
building is 50 yards from the recently-opened Hostal San Miguel, across from the
Amphitheater.
Housing authorities relocated the most immediately affected families but the
others
remain in the building in uneasy anticipation of what may happen. One woman
said, "The collapse was totally unexpected. I havent been able to
sleep since that day." Some residents expressed the hope that the building
will be repaired so that they can stay, but the buildings decrepit
condition suggests that it would have to be torn down to be built anew.
