HAVANA, February 15 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) Due
to a series of organizational snafus, the workers at the "Alberto Delgado"
agricultural cooperative have not been able to buy working clothes or shoes
since 1998.
In 1999, the clothing was not available because the official responsible for
buying the merchandise abroad had asked for political asylum in Canada. The
workers were informed by Pedro Luis Falcón, ideological secretary of the
Communist Party at the cooperative. Falcón told the workers there would
be no clothes available that year.
In 2000, head of production Pedro Martínez told the workers there
would be clothes. In December a truck arrived from the Panamerican Stores with
shoes and clothing, but, since the cooperative had no dollars to buy them with,
the truck returned to Havana. This, in spite of the fact that the cooperative
supplies the tourist industry, and its revenue is in dollars.
Since then, no one, least of all the managers of the cooperative, has said
anything about the availability of clothing.
