HAVANA: French Transportation Minister Jean-Claude Gayssot began an official
visit to Cuba Tuesday to evaluate progress in cooperation agreements signed
between Paris and Havana, official sources said.
Gayssot, the highest-ranking communist in the French administration, is also
to meet members of the cabinet of President Fidel Castro on the visit to last
through January 1.
Cuba and France signed eight cooperation agreements in June 1998 on his last
visit, when he was accompanied by legislators and business executives in the
effort to fortify relations between the two countries.
Gayssot, who met privately with Castro on his last visit to the communist
island, is this week to meet his Cuban counterpart Alvaro Lopez Morales, as well
as foreign investment and cooperation minister Martha Lomas and Foreign Trade
Minister Raul de la Nuez. ( AFP )
