The American Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has defended the
forty-year-old US trade embargo of Cuba, accusing President Castro of promoting
revolution and insurgency.
Speaking to a committee of the House of Representatives, Mr Powell described
the Cuban leader as an anachronism.
He acknowledged that Mr Castro had done some good things for his people, but
went on to accuse him of beating them into submission.
Earlier this week, President Castro said the United States had bullied and
bribed other nations into condemning his country's human rights record. He
condemned Latin American countries who attended the Summit of the Americas -- a
meeting to which he was not invited.
