HAVANA, August 22 (Juan Carlos Linares) - Cuban government is removing UHF
tuners from the Chinese-made Panda TV sets being assembled in Cuba, revealed an
employee at the plant in Boyeros, Havana.
"The purpose of removing the tuners is to eliminate the possibility of
receiving signals from U. S. broadcasters, and to force the people to watch the
two existing Cuban channels," [both of which broadcast in the VHF band],
said the technician working in the plant that will assemble approximately one
million Panda brand TV sets.
Cuban workers who are judged sufficiently deserving by official workers'
assemblies, will earn the right to take out up-to-five-year bank loans to buy 14
or 20 inch Chinese-made TV sets with their UHF tuners removed.
